Mwandishi wa Kinigeria, Uzodinma Iweala, ana makala kwenye gazeti la Washington Post inayosema: Stop Trying To “Save” Africa. Anasema kuwa wananchi wa nchi za Magharibi waache kutuona Waafrika kama vile hakun tunalofanya kubadilisha maisha yetu na kuwa wao ndio “wakombozi” wetu. Kama vile wao (akina Bono, Tony Blair na ile sijui tume yake ya Afrika…imeishia wapi? na wengine wengi) ni “Yesu Kristo” fulani hivi. Wanatuletea habari njema za ukombozi na wokovu. Sehemu ya makala yake inasema hivi:

Why do the media frequently refer to African countries as having been “granted independence from their colonial masters,” as opposed to having fought and shed blood for their freedom? Why do Angelina Jolie and Bono receive overwhelming attention for their work in Africa while Nwankwo Kanu or Dikembe Mutombo, Africans both, are hardly ever mentioned? How is it that a former mid-level U.S. diplomat receives more attention for his cowboy antics in Sudan than do the numerous African Union countries that have sent food and troops and spent countless hours trying to negotiate a settlement among all parties in that crisis?

But come on! - Iweala’s argumentation is threadbare and his arrogance makes him speak on behalf of all Africans. Categorising them all in one go, as well as he does with the whole group of ex-pats trying to save Africa. No doubt that a change of the Western way of saving Africa is necesssary. No doubt that a lot of ex-pats, whatever reason they are in Africa for, can be a pain in the ass (I know some). But I also know a few Ugandans who would never put their feet in West Nile and Kampala youth who would never date a ‘Northener’ because of tradition and the history - and the image! The stereotypes and lack of information thrive within Uganda, Africa and among Africans. It is only Africans who are well off who can afford rejecting support to Africa. They cannot speak for the rest.

And the article speaks for every African - we are tired, all of us! Anything else is better than being treated like brainless poodles that are brain-washed into believing the White Man is necessary before any problems can be solved. We are so fed up, and I am glad this article is spreading far and wide. We don’t want aid. Let’s do trade. But, of course, nobody is going to do that, because it makes us their equals.

Saving Africa has rightly become a popular concern, uniting Bono and Bill Gates, Angelina Jolie and Pope Benedict XVI. Despairing of academic skepticism, the intellectual force of this movement, Jeffrey Sachs, appeals directly to the people promising $110 per head to end destitution and disease in Africa. Who could resist such a humanitarian bargain?
